Post Production
- Post Workflow
With a background in physical production, editorial, VFX, and compression in television, film and commercial environments, I have a very holistic view of how the different post departments work and flow together, from a software and hardware perspective, as well as from a media and creative perspective. How colorspace, timebase, and format all work together to create a final product. - Compositing Supervision
Over the years I’ve touched almost every manner of compositing there is. My primary tool is Nuke/Nuke Studio. I’ve personally worked on or supervised many thousands of shots, ranging from phone screen replacements, blemish cleanup, to full CG, and award winning 2D/3D extension work. I won an Emmy for best supporting VFX for Boardwalk Empire, as well as a VES for best compositing for the same. - Dynamics/3D
As an extension of compositing, I’ve also spent some time on the 3D side of things, primarily for creating elements and other assets that aid the 2D compositing. My weapon of choice is Blender. I’ve been laughed at, but my Blender work has regularly played nationally on TV. - Localization/Tagging
Beyond the initial creation of original content, I’ve worked in the emerging space where mediums are beginning to blend together, and TV spots now ship across many other platforms, each with their own physical constraints. Dealing with delivery matrices that spider into the dozens or hundreds, I’ve had to find a way to quickly and efficiently create versions in ever-tightening schedules and budgets. - Technical Direction
Having worked through the growing pains of building up multiple departments and facilities over the years, I’m battle-hardened to workflow and pipeline setup. I’m also regularly getting my hands dirty with render farm setup, bash and python scripting, and remote administration and deployment.
Production
- VFX Supervision
Everything from device setup for screen replacements, to working hand-in-hand with directors, producers, and crew from planning and pre-vis through final delivery to execute elaborate visual effects. - Data Acquisition
HDRi light probes, photogrammetry, survey data, and reference photography. I’m experienced in setting up, shooting, stitching, and cleaning up light probes, point clouds and extraneous data. Ask me about building a 360 time lapse rig for capturing the Bonneville Salt Flats for 12 hours straight from bright white noon to Milky way midnight, in one take.
Outreach & Education
- On the job training
I’ve trained hundreds of visual effects artists over the years. My goal is to impart a modular approach to problem solving, as well as to help them gain technical and creative savvy, and ultimately be better artists. - Tutoring/Mentoring
I regularly tutor high school kids interested in VFX/post, offering local and remote support as they learn the software. When possible I try to provide both demo materials and hardware as well. - Masters Classes and Panels
I’m frequently asked to sit on panels and give talks covering various topics from basic skills to cloud deployment and implementation. - Thought Leader
A number of my workflow concepts are considered best practices by software vendors. I sit on advisory councils regarding software road maps, and help to shape future tools by working with vendors on alpha and beta level software builds.
